In the summer of 2008, PDP, in association with The Citadel, ran an Intergenerational Project. Click here to view the project report.

The overall strategic aim is to improve the range and provision of services with older people which maintains and improves the quality of their lives and enables them to remain independent and active for as long as possible in the community.

Pilmeny Development Project provides a wide range of services for older people. We aim to maintain and improve the quality of life and to help other people to remain independent and active within their local community.

We have developed a number of new initiatives in line with the Council's current Community Care and strategic developments for older people. Work in this area includes:

  • Development of older peoples involvement in City of Edinburgh Council's 'A City for all Ages' Service Plan for older people in Edinburgh.
  • Development of training and specialist provision for Minority Ethnic older people and their carers.
  • Participation in Lothian Health Task Group activities for Older People (conference, training, and small grants).
  • Development of North East Edinburgh Ageing Well Project.
  • Development of 'Today and Tomorrow' Group to address needs of minority ethnic older people and their carers in Edinburgh.
  • Development of recommendations of 'Beyond the Stereotype', an action research initiative undertaken by PDP with over 500 older people for North East Edinburgh
  • Development of North East Edinburgh Older Man and Mental Health Initiative.

In Addition to these areas of work, the Project continues to provide a range of services for local older people. This includes help and support to:

  • Development of North East Edinburgh Care Action Group (NEECAG) Leith, which provides older people in the Leith area the opportunity to participate in consultation on Community Care and related issues.
  • Milan (Senior Welfare Council) a provision for older people from Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Mauritian Communities.
  • Minority Ethnic Carers of Older People projects (MECOPP)
  • Alzheimer's Scotland Action on Dementia Polish and Ukrainian Outreach Project

As well as providing information, advice, and home visiting to over 65 housebound and elderly people in this area in 2004/2005.

We co-ordinate North East Edinburgh Elderly Workers Network and work closely with Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations Council, Lothian Health, Living Memory Association, Lothian Voluntary Sector Forum on dementia, to name but a few, to ensure the views and needs of older people and those who work with them are represented.

NEECAG Aims and Objectives

Aim
To enable older people to exchange points of view about Community Care by gaining information about services, discussing these services, consulting older people locally and raising issues and concerns with relevant professional bodies to help people get services – by giving advice, help and encouragement to apply.

Objectives
NEECAG seeks to:-

· Provide a forum to enable older people and their carers to access and inform Health and Community Care policies and other relevant services.

· Increase awareness of where and how older people and their carers can get information/advice and practical help on issues of concern.

· Assist older people and their carers to gain access to services by giving help, advice and encouragement.

· Raise issues and concerns with relevant professional bodies.

· Consult and involve older people and their carers in any plans for new services or changes in existing ones.

* Increase the involvement of older people with disabilities and minority ethnic older people and their carers.
